Madeline Burns, M.Ed. & Tutor
I have years of experience with students in classroom, after-school, camp, college counseling, and home settings. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Communication with a minor in Education from The Ohio State University in 2018. During my time at Ohio State, I was an assistant preschool teacher and camp counselor. In 2019, I obtained my Master of Education with Certification in Grades K-5 from Vanderbilt University where I gained experience as both a 3rd grade and kindergarten student teacher, as well as, a district-wide substitute. Following my M.Ed. program, I taught 4th and 2nd grade at two different independent schools, one being my own alma mater and the other a private day school on the Upper East Side. After my time in the classroom, I worked for a college counseling educational consultancy and currently work in educational technology.
Throughout my time in education, I have developed an interest in researching how leveraging students’ prior knowledge and experiences in an educational setting helps lead to deeper, more transferable learning.
During my free time, I love spending time with my family and friends, trying out new restaurants, dog sitting, going to spin class, and painting. I also enjoy participating in service trips to Central America where I help build schools to increase access to education in rural, indigenous communities.
I am passionate about helping young learners become confident readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and anything else they aspire to be!

Literacy
To be a successful reader, students need strong phonological and phonemic awareness as well as a toolbox of practiced comprehension strategies. In each of my sessions, I will select a specific phonics and reading comprehension goal to focus on based on your student's individual needs. These needs will be determined by a variety of assessments that help me pinpoint specific skills. It is best-practice to integrate these two goals together, so students are able to see phonetic patterns in context. As your child begins to soar, we will track this growth together, so your student can see how far they have come.
Mathematics
It is important to teach the "why" with mathematics. I help students reach a deeper understanding of how and why math works by showing them the reasoning behind the tricks. We will focus on finding and using patterns to remember and learn math facts and solve problems in multiple different ways, so your student can discover what works best for them!
